“He’s fine,” I assured her, shocked that I actually meant it.

She nodded, though she still seemed unsure.

“And thanks for the ride,” she said, smiling.

I shoved my hands into my pockets. “No need to thank me,” I said. “I’m not sure if you can tell, but I very much enjoy being in your presence.

Rafael certainly seems to know this much.”

The tone of her skin deepened, and she frowned, shaking her head. “Patrick, I’m sorry about what happened today. I don’t know what came over me, but you didn’t deserve it.”

“I thought you said we should forget it.”

“I know, but I’ve been thinking about it all day. It was super embarrassing and I just had to let you know how sorry I am.”

I didn’t say anything.
